Could you surface mount the 120 volt fixture directly in a rail post without a box?

Yes, although we recommend using a box if possible. There is enough room inside of the light itself to make connections if you run the conduit directly to the Knockout on the back of the light. We recommend consulting with a licensed electrician on all 120V lighting jobs.
